The then 27-year-old surrendered her teaching certificate in December 2018 and was held in a Maricopa County jail on a $250,000 bond until her sentence was decided.
As an adult, you can overpower or influence the child mentally, emotionally, and physically. But there are few who tend to use this power irresponsibly, sometimes turning extremely abusive. Like one Arizona teacher who decided to take advantage of one of her students.
Brittany Zamora, the 6th-grade teacher at Las Brisas Academy, also had sexual relations with the then 13-year-old student, according to People.
The teacher pleaded guilty to molesting of a child, sexual conduct with a child, and public sexual indecency as per court proceedings. The then 27-year-old surrendered her teaching certificate in December 2018 and was held in a Maricopa County jail on a $250,000 bond until her sentence was decided.
The matter came to light when the student's parents informed law enforcement in March 2018. The parents had seen the inappropriate texts between the student and the teacher on the teenager’s phone.
The relationship between the two started after Zamora was sent a message on a school app - Class Craft, an online instruction app. That day, she asked her students to message her on the app as she was bored. The conversation with the 13-year-old boy turned flirty and eventually became a full-fledged sexual relationship, according to AZ Central News.
According to court records, the pair had exchanged sexually charged texts regularly. One of the texts the teacher sent read: "If I could quit my job and have sex with you all day long, I would." In another conversation, the boy said he wanted to have sex with her, to which her response was: "I know baby! I want you every day with no time limit."
Law enforcement authorities said the teacher also sent nude pictures of herself and at least one of herself in lingerie. They said that the pair also behaved inappropriately in class. Once, Zamora played a video for the class to watch, only to fondle the victim at the back of the room.
The boy's friend revealed that he was forced to be the lookout while the teacher and the boy had sex, on school premises. The friend and the victim had stayed back at school for a talent show rehearsal even after the others had left. Zamora began kissing the 13-year-old before asking the victim’s friend to keep a lookout. “They were just doing it. It was very uncomfortable,” said the friend to the police.
The victim’s stepmother told the police that she realized something was wrong when she noticed that the boy was acting suspiciously, and wanting to shut his door at night. This prompted her to install a parental monitoring app called “Sentry” on his phone. The app sent alerts about inappropriate texts, so she confronted the boy. This is when the boy opened up to her and told his stepmother about the sexual relationship he had been having with his teacher, according to the police reports.
Other parents were alerted of the incident too. "It just freaked me out right away," said Jessica Arroyo, a concerned parent. "That's just crazy. I can't even connect that. That's wrong." Another parent, who was just as shocked, said, “I think as parents, we just need to be here to stand up and protect our kids and do whatever we can.”
According to The Sun, she allegedly had sex with the teen at least four times between February 1 and March 8, 2018, including one occasion when she went to his grandparent's house to have sex with him in her car. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison in July 2019, as per AZ Central. Additionally, she will be on probation for the rest of her life and will have to register as a sex offender.
